Foundation Friday for Over 50s

This is the 3rd post in my new series called “Foundation Friday for Over 50s” in which I’ll be testing a different foundation every friday for over 50 year old skin! In the past I’ve tried around 70 foundations and of those I’ve liked about 5-7 which just shows how hard it is to find a foundation that looks good on more mature skin (or it shows how picky I am. . . )

Older skin comes with it’s own set of problems like uneven tone, age spots, enlarged pores, surface roughness and wrinkles, and I’m sad to say I’ve got them all. So the ideal foundation would help to disguise those things and hopefully make my skin look better than it really is! So check back every friday to see if I’ve found the elusive “holy grail” foundation yet. . .

Today’s foundation is Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum ~ $13 for 1 oz., comes in 6 shades ~ Available in the US on Amazon.com*

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation Looking It’s Best (Just Applied Over Primer with Mattefying Finishing Powder to Set)

I reviewed Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation about a year ago and on that day it was the winner and I liked it very much, especially for dry skin. When I posted that review, many of the comments were that if I liked the Healthy Mix Foundation, I’d LOVE the Serum version. Nisha at Sugarpuffandfluff (on youtube) sent me a sample in No 53 Light Beige.

“Its fresh and instant blending gel texture blends and glides onto the skin for an even, natural finish with no mask effect. Imperfections are erased, signs of fatigue are smoothed and the skin’s radiance is boosted for up to 16 hours*. . .Made from an instant anti-fatigue vitamin-rich fruit therapy formula with litchi, goji berries and pomegranates.”

It comes in an air-tight plastic bottle with a pump dispenser.

Ingredients:

This is a water and silicone base that contains some denatured alcohol and a pretty strong fragrance. It also contains vitamin e, and fruit extracts. Does not contain sunscreen.

Application:

I tried the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum two times with different application methods. First I tried applying with my fingers which was slightly smeary so I buffed over that with a flat-top kabuki brush and that made it look quite nice. The 2nd attempt was with primer and a damp blending sponge.

Coverage:

This is a light coverage foundation that’s supposed to leave a semi-matte finish. The coverage is quite light, so you will need concealer, and it’s not really buildable to fuller coverage, so it’s best for days when you want a more natural look.

Finish:

The finish is definitely NOT what I would call semi-matte… it’s more of a soft radiant finish. To mattify I set it with IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores HD Powder. It quickly became shiny and remained too shiny for my liking throughout the day.

Pores & Wrinkles:

Pores looked fine at first, but it settled into them as the day wore on leaving the lovely white polka-dot look. It settled into forehead wrinkles right away when applied with the sponge.

Wear:

It says it’s a 16 hour “radiance booster” so I don’t know if that means 16 hours of wear or 16 hours of shininess…

The Verdict:

This isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever had on my face, but it’s not the best either. There’s actually something about this foundation… (I even got a compliment on it)! Looking at the all day wear pictures, it seems to look nicer as it wears off. The pictures at 5 hours look the best to me from a distance, but the up close at 5 hours is not good so it’s a quandary. The price is nice, but the alcohol and the scent are deal breakers for me. I could probably tolerate those things if it didn’t settle into wrinkles and pores.
